Owl hooters work well predawn, but owls typically don’t hoot during the day. You’re better off using a crow call after daylight. Plastic- or composite-barreled crow calls can mimic sounds well but are not as durable as wood barrels; I have cracked several plastic barrels. The Real Crow Call by Woodhaven mimics the high and low pitches of crows perfectly. The composite mouthpiece surrounds a hand-tuned reed, and the wooden barrel is ergonomically designed for cupping your hands for directional calls. A dedicated notch secures the included lanyard in the top end of the wooden barrel, but it is removable.
